Obituary of Zoltan Csukonyi

Zoltan Csukonyi, age 84, of New Canaan, CT formerly of Bethesda, MD and San Francisco, CA died Tuesday, February 7, 2012 in Norwalk Hospital. Born in Budapest, Hungary on November 20, 1927, he was the son of the late Col. Ferenc and Maria Martonossi Csukonyi. He was predeceased by his wife, Marianne Csejtey Csukonyi, and by his son, Dr. Zsolt Csukonyi. Mr. Csukonyi was an electrical engineer by profession, having obtained his engineering degree from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. He began his career at the Hungarian Electrical Works, Hungary’s primary electrical company, where he assumed a leading role in organizing company-wide resistance to Soviet occupation upon the outbreak of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. Following the defeat of the Revolution he fled Hungary with his family and settled in the United States. Upon arrival from Hungary, Mr. Csukonyi was employed for a number of years at the Public Service Electric and Gas Company of New Jersey. He then joined the Bechtel Corporation in San Francisco, where he specialized in nuclear power plant design during his 30-year tenure at the firm. Mr. Csukonyi also conducted power systems analyses, assessing which combination of power plants would best meet various utilities’ long-range needs. While he was initially based in San Francisco, then Los Angeles and Washington D.C., Mr. Csukonyi’s work took him to Korea, Italy, Taiwan and many other locations in Asia and Europe. Upon his retirement, Mr. Csukonyi performed consulting work in Africa. Upon retirement, Mr. Csukonyi resided in Bethesda, Maryland until the death of his wife of 52 years, Marianne Csejtey Csukonyi, in 2003. He moved to New Canaan in 2004 to be with his daughter and her family. In New Canaan, Mr. Csukonyi regularly attended the Senior Men’s Club and Exchange Club events. He was also active in the Hungarian Engineers’ Club of New York City and the Hungarian Cultural Society of Connecticut. Mr. Csukonyi is survived by his daughter, Marianne Csukonyi Toldalagi and her husband Paul Toldalagi of New Canaan and their children Nicholas and Christina, as well as by his grandchildren Thibault and Laura Csukonyi of Paris, France. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11am on Saturday, February 18, 2012 at St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church, 21 Cherry Street, New Canaan. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, San Francisco, CA.
