As the many decades go past, and I am approaching the age of seventy, my memories often return to the days when my family lived in Stamford and Southport, Connecticut. So, this morning, for some unknown reason, into my mind popped the memory of a tall, youthful fellow that I briefly dated, as a young teenager. At that time, Lee and his twin brother lived in New Cannan and I lived on Sasco Hill Road, just along the border of the Fairfield Country Club, in Southport in a home that looked out towards Long Island Sound. My parents were strict, and they would only allow me to date Lee, if a parent (his father) chauffeured us to and from the various teen dances that we attended, mainly because two twin girls at a school I had previously attended in Stamford (Low Heywood) were tragically killed on a snowy evening, by hitting black ice, in an auto accident with their dates, who were teenage drivers. So, although Lee, being older than l was, had his driver’s license, there would be no dates with any teenage drivers, by edict if my father, and his Dad had to drive us. Lee was a great conversationalist, and as I recall, he had a Fender electric guitar, and liked rock & roll music, as did I. He had some electronic skills too, at the time, and he crafted a headphone jack in the lid of a jar that one could then plug a set of over-the-ears headphones into, and listen to loud music in stereo! Believe me, that contraption came in handy, because my parents always were shouting to turn down the volume of my music. At the time, the Beatles had just released their Sergeant Pepper’s album, and l was already a huge fan of The Rolling Stones, a band that I continue to follow to this day. By the time I was to enter 10th grade, my parents moved our family to Duxbury, MA and l lost touch with Lee. But I fondly remember him as an enthusiastic teenager with lots of skills and ambition. I was truly sad to learn of his early demise in life. I hope that his entire family continue to hold him fondly in their memories, as do I. He obviously remained a wonderful person as an adult, and sadly left this earth far too soon.
Sincerely, “Ciddy” Carlysle Ann Young

Dear Rosemary,
I was shocked and so saddened when I read of Lee's death. It's been quite a while since I've seen you now that our boys have graduated from NCHS and I had no idea that Lee has been so ill. My heart breaks for you and Dean during this terribly difficult and sad time for you all. I am so sorry for your loss.
I'm smiling as I remember Lee cheering from the sidelines during the Rec basketball games at the Y. The pride and joy he showed in Dean was written all over his happy face. He was such a proud Dad!
My thoughts and prayers are with you and Dean.
All my best, Lisa Bitting

Lee always had a smile on his face and could make me laugh. Like his Mom and Dad he was a wonderful person who cared about others. I have many fond memories of Christmas past where the whole family got together on Christmas Eve. Those were such wonderful times. I'll miss you cousin. Till we meet again in Gods kingdom...

Dear Rosemary and Dean,
For us, Lee was the perfect neighbor: a gentleman, always ready with a wave, sharing in the enjoyment of his family and his home, but especially one that we could always call upon... We will miss his guidance and steadfastness but we will keep on saluting him as we come home.
Forever fondly in our memory.
The Monrads

They don't make 'em like Lee Gillespie anymore.
Lee was solid. He was honest. He had integrity … and loyalty … and character. He valued truth and stood up to those who attempted to live by less. I saw Lee Gillespie as the twentieth century's version of Don Quixote, sallying forth to right wrongs, rescue truth and virtue, and snatch the brass ring in favor of family and friends.
Friendships are worth their weight in gold; I value the one I was fortunate to share with Lee. He was funny. He was introspective. He was thoughtful, and he was certainly responsive. Lee Gillespie often seemed clairvoyant in his predictions. He was brilliant, determined, focused, and yet sympathetic. He lived for his wife and his son, yet always made time for his friends … as well as for many a good cause. We were very fortunate to have been brought into his "sphere".
The void is immeasurable, and the mystery of: "Why? How? Why him? Why now?" is incomprehensible.
God bless you Lee, as you depart on the next segment of your journey. And may He be with us here on earth who must bear the sadness of your loss.
