Obituary of Pamela Jean Libertiny

Pamela Jean Libertiny of South Salem, NY passed peacefully in her home on Friday, September 27, 2024, with the Love of her life, Attila Libertiny, by her side. After an 8-year battle with metastatic breast cancer we’re comforted to know she is now with God in Heaven.

Pam was born to Joseph and Marie Bartolutti on February 2, 1952, in Abington, Pennsylvania.  She spent her formative years in Louisville, Kentucky where she attended St Pius X School, Sacred Heart High School and later graduated from Seneca High School.  She attended the University of Kentucky graduating with a B.A. in business education and served as the president of the Delta Zeta sorority.

During college, her family relocated to Stamford, CT where, while walking her dog Mona down the street, she unknowingly “bumped into” her next-door neighbor and future husband. She married Attila Libertiny, on June 2, 1974, at St Thomas More Church in Darien, CT.  Recently celebrating their 50^th wedding anniversary, Pam and Attila invited the entire family to the Outer Banks, North Carolina in August for one last unforgettable family vacation.

Pam was always an active member of her community.  Starting in Arlington, Virginia she worked for the Stanford Research Institute in Washington, D.C. She started off on the “ground floor”, as the saying goes, as a secretary and made it up the ladder to a management position in two and a half years.  After moving to South Salem, NY, she volunteered locally as a continuing education instructor at John Jay High School in 1978, running a course called, “Just for Women: Let’s Get Back to Business”.  She raised a family of four children and continued to be active in the area.  She was a member of the Young Women’s League as the liaison to the YMCA; an officer of the Fairfield Alumnae Panhellenic Association; a member of the local PTA in Lewisboro; youth softball coach; girl scout leader; catechism teacher for St Aloysius; and volunteer parent for the Lewisboro swim and dive team.

She started her involvement at the New Canaan YMCA volunteering as a timer during kids’ swim meets, and eventually training to be a swim referee. At the same time, she returned to work volunteering for the YMCA in the back office part-time as she raised her children, earning Volunteer of the Year awards and other accolades. Eventually transitioning to full-time as an executive assistant to the Executive Director, she rose to the level of Vice President of Human Resources and Risk Management.  She retired in March 2022 after spending nearly 32 years at the YMCA.  On the officiating front, she was a fixture of Connecticut Swimming, constantly volunteering for swim events – even ones in which her children were not participating.  She was a meet director, head of registration, and a USA Swimming referee.  She officiated for USA Swimming all the way up to the US Swimming Nationals in Long Island.  She received the Maxwell Excellence Award in 2001 for her contributions as a volunteer official in competitive swimming.  In 2009 she received the ConocoPhillips Outstanding Service Award for USA Swimming. Also in 2009 the New Canaan YMCA honored her by naming the winter age group qualifier meet as the ‘Pam Libertiny Qualifier’, which still runs each November at the New Canaan YMCA.

Her achievements outside the home were matched only by achievements inside the home.  She raised four successful children, organized their activities and schedules, ran car-pools for all their activities, supported them through college, and played the role of ‘Grammy’ to perfection.

She is predeceased by her mother Marie Grace Bartolutti, father Joseph John Bartolutti, and brother Joseph John Bartolutti, Jr.  She is survived by her husband Attila; four children Michelle, Atti (Robyn), Timea (David), and Nicholas (Jennifer); and four grandchildren Alyster, Riane, William, and Madeline.  She leaves behind friends all over the community, from St A’s, the YMCA, Delta Zeta, and family throughout the area and across the world. 

She will be loved and missed deeply.  She is one of the truly good ones whom God has called to his side and will look loving down on all of us.  May she rest in peace.

Visitation will be 5-8 pm Thursday, October 3, 2024, at Hoyt Funeral Home, 199 Main Street, New Canaan, CT. The funeral mass is Friday October 4, 10:00 am at St. Aloysius Parish, 21 Cherry St, New Canaan with graveside services to follow at Long Ridge Union Cemetery, 156 Erskine Rd, Stamford, CT.
